Justice system actors:

  • see first-hand how technologists and business-people would design and redesign the justice system

  • help introduce justice-sector challenges to British Columbia’s technologists

  • meet other justice sector leaders who care about access to justice and related services

  • see what can be done in 24 hours

  • experience a paradigm shift

Create a working prototype

The goal: create a working prototype that will improve the way British Columbians resolve (or avoid) disputes. Bonus points for apps that create data for further study.

Subject: ideas aimed at improving the way any type of dispute in British Columbia can be resolved (or avoided) are welcome. Justice Hack 2018 is "family law encouraged." If you don't have an idea but would like to participate, we are providing background materials aimed at family law dispute resolution. The goal is to make dispute resolution, or avoidance, more efficient or organized, and provide users with a better overall experience.

WHY FAMILY LAW?

In 2013, the Canadian Forum for Civil Justice called for “systematic and cultural changes to the way we resolve family conflicts.” It found that while “Canadian family law is highly evolved and comprehensive,” how the law is applied is increasingly complex, unaffordable and inaccessible.” Crucially, it found that without access to the right mechanisms, the rules themselves limited value.

Who's in a team?

Teams of 3-5 people, with at least one technologist (Hacker), one designer (Hipster), and one business-type (Hustler).

Teams may optionally recruit one justice-sector expert, but all teams will also receive coaching, Q&A opportunities, and feedback from justice-sector mentors throughout the event.

Please feel free to register solo, and we will do our best to match you with a team. If you register solo and cannot find a team before the event starts, you will receive a full refund.

You can connect with potential teammates at Legal Hackers Vancouver meetups, or on our attendee slack channel. Slack information will be sent to you when you sign up to our email list »
